Back-Four Cross Shift — Near CB Attacks Ball, Far CB Protects Second Runner

A box-defending exercise focused on differentiated centre-back roles during wide service. One attacks the ball; the other does not follow into the same zone and instead protects the next threat.

Coordinate the back four on a cross so the near centre-back attacks the delivery while the far centre-back protects the second runner and central depth.

Organization

Use a full-size goal and wide crossing channel. A back four plus goalkeeper defend against three box runners and a crosser. On service, the near CB attacks the first-ball zone, far CB narrows behind to track the second runner, and fullbacks protect posts/width.

Coaching Points

Near CB attacks the flight decisively | Far CB stays connected rather than chasing the same ball | Fullbacks see both ball and runners | Clear first contact away from central danger | Back line reorganises immediately for the second ball

Progressions

  • Allow the crosser to choose low, clipped or far-post service.

Regressions

  • Use fixed runner lanes and passive attackers.
