Cruyff Turn Gate — Disguise, Cut Back and Go

The player feints a pass, drags the ball behind the standing leg, and accelerates through a gate in the opposite direction. The drill isolates the Cruyff turn as a disguise move and trains the coordination of feint, drag, and burst in one fluid action.

Develop the Cruyff turn (feint pass, cut ball behind standing leg, accelerate) as a disguise move to beat a defender or change direction.

Organization

Set up 4 gates (2 cones 1.5m apart) in a 20×15m area. Player dribbles toward a gate at moderate speed, feints a pass or shot, plants the standing leg beside the ball, cuts the ball behind the standing leg with the inside of the other foot, and accelerates through the next gate. Repeat through all 4 gates. Rest 30s between rounds. 4 rounds.

Coaching Points

1. Sell the feint with the upper body — shoulders and hips must commit forward before the cut. 2. Plant the standing leg slightly ahead of the ball to leave room for the cut. 3. Cut the ball with the inside of the foot behind the standing leg — not around it. 4. Accelerate immediately after the cut — the first 2 steps are the escape. 5. Keep the ball close during the approach — don't let it run away. 6. Look up after the exit to see the next gate.

Progressions

  • Add a passive defender at the gate who steps in on the call — player must execute the Cruyff before contact.
  • Set a 3-second time limit to complete all 4 gates — speed of execution under pressure.

Regressions

  • Practice the cut motion stationary first — plant, cut, stop — then add the dribbling approach.
  • Remove the feint and just focus on the cut and acceleration.
