Defensive Recovery Run — Delay and Protect

A recovery-defending exercise where a defender begins out of position and must sprint back, recover inside and delay an attacker progressing toward goal.

Organization

Create a 25m channel toward goal. The attacker starts with the ball while the defender begins several metres behind and slightly outside. The coach starts the action with both players live.

Coaching Points

Recover inside the line of the ball | Sprint first, then decelerate into defending stance | Do not dive in | Show the attacker away from the centre | Buy time for teammates to recover

Progressions

  • Add a second attacker arriving late to create a recovery decision.

Regressions

  • Shorten the attacker's head start.
