Far-Foot Receive — Open Hips and Play Opposite

The receiver takes the pass with the foot furthest from the passer, opening the hips to redirect the ball in the opposite direction before playing forward. The exercise builds the fundamental habit of receiving across the body so the next pass is already lined up.

Develop receiving with the far foot (the foot furthest from the passer), opening the hips to play in the opposite direction — a fundamental possession habit.

Organization

Set up 2 cones 10m apart in a 15×10m area. Player A passes to Player B. Player B receives with the far foot (left foot if pass comes from the right), opens the hips, takes a touch across the body, and plays back to Player A who has moved to a new cone 3m to the side. Continue, moving the cones after each pass. 90s per pair, rest 30s, 3 sets. Switch directions.

Coaching Points

1. Receive with the foot furthest from the passer — it opens the body naturally. 2. Open the hips — the knee and foot point in the direction you want to play. 3. First touch takes the ball across the body, not forward. 4. The pass goes back in the opposite direction of the receive — play the way you're facing. 5. After passing, move to a new angle — don't stand still. 6. Pass on the ground, inside of the foot, firm and accurate.

Progressions

  • Add a passive defender behind the receiver — far-foot receive must happen before pressure arrives.
  • Limit to one-touch — receive and pass in a single motion.

Regressions

  • Use two touches — receive, settle, then pass.
  • Make the distance shorter (6m) — easier pass and receive.
