Fullback Stops Short — Winger Overlaps from Inside

A role-reversal wide attack where the winger begins inside and the fullback receives underneath. Instead of the fullback overlapping, the winger curves outside beyond the fullback to receive in the crossing lane.

Reverse the normal wide relationship by holding the fullback underneath while the winger runs around the outside from an inside starting position.

Organization

Use a 24x20m wide channel toward a full-size goal with goalkeeper. The winger begins in the half-space, fullback underneath and 8 centrally. The fullback receives from the 8, stops short of the defender and releases the winger overlapping outside.

Coaching Points

Fullback holds position to draw the defender | Winger starts inside before running around | Release pass goes into space ahead of the runner | 8 remains available for an inside recycle | Box runners time movement from the winger's first touch wide

Progressions

  • Add a tracking wide midfielder who can follow the winger's overlap.

Regressions

  • Use passive pressure and rehearse the role-reversal timing.
