2v2 Attack Together — Commit, Support & Combine

A live 2v2 duel where the attacking pair must solve a defensive pair through commit → support → carry-or-pass decision-making. The ball carrier attacks space and commits the first defender; the supporting attacker creates a useful angle; together they read the defensive reaction and decide whether to carry or combine to beat the pair and progress through a directional target. The defending pair uses pressure + cover. Run in 2 parallel 2v2 units with 8 players.

Develop attacking decision-making in a live 2v2 where the ball carrier commits a defender, the supporting attacker creates a useful angle, and the pair reads the defensive reaction to decide whether to carry or pass and combine to beat the defensive pair.

Organization

Set up 2 parallel rectangular channels (16–22 m long, 10–14 m wide each). Each channel contains 2 attackers (blue) vs 2 defenders (red) and 1 ball. Both attackers begin active; both defenders begin in front, goal-side. Ball starts with one attacker. The second attacker begins laterally or slightly diagonally — not directly beside the ball carrier on the same line — so there is a genuine support decision. The ball carrier attacks space and commits the first defender. The supporting attacker creates a diagonal angle, adjusts distance continuously, and moves as the ball carrier commits the defender. The pair reads the defensive reaction: if the first defender does not commit, the carrier may continue carrying; if the first defender commits, releasing to the supporting teammate may become the best solution; if the second defender jumps to the pass, the space created can be attacked. The attackers combine to beat the pair and progress through the target (end line, gate, or mini goal). The first defender presses or delays the ball carrier; the second defender provides cover, protects central space, and adjusts as the ball travels. If defenders regain, they immediately counter toward the attacker's start line. Continuous short bouts. Run parallel 2v2 units when squad size allows.

Coaching Points

Attacking: attack free space positively, commit defender before releasing the ball, don't pass too early, support at an angle not behind the defender, keep useful distance between attackers, create width when defender protects centre, attack inside when defender protects outside, communicate, move immediately after passing, receive with next action in mind, use overlap only when space demands it, accelerate once defensive line is beaten. Defending: first defender controls ball carrier, second defender provides cover, protect centre, adjust cover distance as ball travels, communicate who presses, do not both attack the same player, react immediately to pass, counter quickly after regain. Decision-making: if first defender does not commit, keep carrying; if first defender commits, pass may release teammate; if second defender jumps, attack the space created.

Progressions

  • Narrower pitch
  • Defenders start slightly closer
  • Time limit to progress
  • Two target gates to increase decision-making
  • Bonus for beating defender with pass-and-move
  • Immediate finish after breaking pair
  • Defenders counter after regain
  • Attackers alternate starting ball carrier

Regressions

  • Wider area
  • Defenders start deeper
  • Additional preparation distance
  • First defender initially delayed
  • Larger target
  • Clear starting support position
