2v2+2 Wide Targets — Combine Inside, Release Outside

Two attackers face two defenders inside a central area with one target player on each touchline. The team in possession must combine centrally and recognise when pressure has narrowed enough to release a wide player.

Develop using central combinations to draw defenders before releasing a wide target into space.

Organization

Create a 22x18m central box with one neutral wide target on each side. Play 2v2 inside. The attacking pair can use either wide target; a point is scored when a central player receives back from a wide target after first connecting inside. Rotate neutrals every 2–3 minutes.

Coaching Points

Do not play wide too early without drawing pressure | Central players support at different heights | Wide targets stay available on the outside shoulder | Receive the return pass facing forward | Switch to the opposite target if the first side is locked

Progressions

  • Allow defenders to press the wide target after the first pass outside.

Regressions

  • Make the wide targets one-touch neutrals and keep defenders central.
