Winger Double Movement — Check Short, Sprint Behind

The winger first shows toward the ball to draw the defender forward, then changes pace and runs behind for a pass into space. The practice develops timing, deception and explosive separation on the outside.

Develop a winger's double movement to lose a marker by checking short before accelerating into the space behind.

Organization

Set a 25x15m wide channel with passer, winger, defender and end target. The winger starts high, checks 3–5m toward the passer, then spins behind as the defender reacts. The passer chooses whether to play to feet or into space based on the defender's movement.

Coaching Points

Sell the short movement with real intent | Change speed sharply after the defender steps | Stay onside before accelerating behind | Pass into the runner's path, not toward the touchline | Winger scans before the second movement

Progressions

  • Make the defender fully live and allow the winger to choose short or in behind.

Regressions

  • Use a mannequin or passive defender and rehearse the timing unopposed.
