6 Drops into Back Line — Protect Through Ball Behind Stepping CB

A defensive unit exercise where one centre-back steps toward a receiver between lines. The 6 recognises the movement and drops into the back line to protect the space exposed behind the stepping defender.

Use the 6 as emergency depth when a centre-back steps into midfield pressure and a through-ball threat appears behind.

Organization

Use a 32x28m central area toward a full-size goal with goalkeeper. Attackers include a 10, striker and runner. Defenders include two CBs, 6 and fullbacks or side gates. When a CB steps to the 10, the 6 drops behind into the vacated line.

Coaching Points

6 reads the CB step before the through pass is played | Dropping midfielder protects depth, not the same receiver | Remaining CB narrows across | Stepping CB presses aggressively only with cover | Recover to normal roles when the ball is secured or played backward

Progressions

  • Add a second runner attacking the opposite channel.

Regressions

  • Use a coach-called CB step and a single predictable runner.
