Clearance Line Step — Push Out Together for the Second Ball

A box-defending exercise focused on the action immediately after the first clearance. Defenders must step out together rather than remaining on the goal line and allowing the opponent to regain uncontested.

Develop collective movement out of the box after a clearance so the defensive line can compete for the next ball from a higher position.

Organization

Use a full-size goal and penalty area with defenders, attackers and one server. The attack delivers into the box. After the defending team clears, the coach or an outside player serves a second ball toward the edge. The back line must push out together and compete for it.

Coaching Points

First clearance goes away from central danger | Step out as the ball leaves the box | Keep the line connected while moving forward | Midfielders attack the second ball | Drop again if the second service is played behind

Progressions

  • Allow the attacking team to recycle the clearance immediately rather than using a coach-fed second ball.

Regressions

  • Use predictable clearance direction and pause briefly before the second service.
