Counterpress Three, Release One — Closest Collapse, Far Player Stays High

A transition possession game that separates counterpressing roles. The three closest players collapse around the lost ball while a designated far player resists joining and remains available beyond pressure.

Coordinate a three-player counterpress around the turnover while one far player deliberately stays high as an outlet if possession is regained.

Organization

Play 4v4 or 5v5 in a 30x24m area with one end target or high outlet zone for each team. On losing possession, the three closest players must counterpress. The farthest designated player stays outside the pressure pocket and becomes the first forward outlet after a regain.

Coaching Points

Closest three react instantly and close different escape lanes | Far player stays high instead of chasing the turnover | Regain first, then find the outlet quickly | Counterpressing players stay compact around the ball | If pressure is broken, recover rather than continuing a hopeless chase

Progressions

  • Reduce the counterpress window to three seconds and make the high outlet one touch.

Regressions

  • Use passive first escape pressure and allow four players to counterpress initially.
