Cutback Recycle — Reset Outside the Box and Re-Attack

A final-third pattern that begins with a normal cutback but continues when the lane is closed. The team secures the ball outside the box, changes the angle and attacks again rather than forcing the first delivery.

Develop the second attacking phase when an initial cutback is blocked and the ball must be recycled before re-entering the box.

Organization

Create a wide byline attack with three attackers in and around the box and three defenders. The first cutback lane is deliberately blocked. The crosser or receiver recycles to a supporting player outside the area, who switches the angle before the group re-attacks the box.

Coaching Points

Do not force a blocked cutback | Support player stays outside the first pressure | Recycle with one secure pass | Box runners reset their positions before the second attack | Re-enter through a different lane

Progressions

  • Allow defenders to counter through mini-goals if they win the recycled pass.

Regressions

  • Use passive defenders and coach a fixed second-entry pattern.
