First Pass Forward — Regain and Break

A transition practice that isolates the first pass after a regain. Players win the ball in a compact central area and score by finding a forward target quickly, encouraging scanning before the turnover and positive first actions.

Organization

Play 4v4 or 5v5 in a 26x22m central area with one target player or end zone beyond each end line. When possession changes, the new team has three seconds to attempt a forward pass into its target.

Progressions

  • Add a second forward target and require the receiving target to connect a third-player run.

Regressions

  • Increase the area and extend the decision window from three to five seconds.
