High Regain to Backward Set — Secure with 6, Release Runner Beyond

An attacking-transition exercise that deliberately avoids forcing the first pass forward. After a high regain, players use a backward set to the 6 to stabilise the ball before launching the next forward action.

Turn a high regain into a controlled attack by first securing possession backward to the 6, then releasing a forward runner.

Organization

Play 5v5 in a 34x28m middle-third area with a designated 6 for each team and two mini-goals at each end. On a regain in the attacking half, the team earns double if the first or second action finds the 6 before a forward pass releases a runner.

Coaching Points

Recognise when the immediate forward pass is crowded | 6 stays underneath the regain | Set pass must be secure and quick | Forward runner moves as the ball travels back | Attack the next line before the opponent reorganises

Progressions

  • Limit the 6 to one touch after the regain.

Regressions

  • Give the 6 a protected zone for the securing pass.
