Mid-Block Press — Trigger and Collective Shift

A coordinated pressing drill from a compact mid-block. The defending team learns to recognize when to press collectively and when to hold, shift, and wait for the next trigger — not every pass triggers a press.

Develop coordinated pressing from a compact mid-block where the defending team recognizes when to press collectively and when to hold, drop, and reset the block.

Organization

Set up a directional rectangular pitch (approximately 50 × 36 m) clearly divided into three thirds — first third, MIDDLE THIRD (primary working zone), and final third — with a target end zone at each end. Split players into two teams of 7 (possession vs pressing). The pressing team forms a compact mid-block in the middle third, protecting central progression with at least two connected lines. The possession team circulates the ball and attempts to progress through the middle third toward the opposite end zone. The pressing team does NOT press every pass — they hold shape, protect the centre, and move laterally together while waiting for a clear trigger (ball enters middle-third target area, poor first touch, receiver facing own goal, backward pass, slow square pass, isolated receiver). When the trigger appears, the nearest player steps aggressively, the second defender covers inside, near-side teammates shift toward the ball, far-side players squeeze in, and the whole block shortens distances to press collectively. If no strong trigger appears, the team holds, shifts, and waits. If the press is broken, the team drops and reforms the block. After regain, transition immediately toward the nearest target zone.

Coaching Points

Stay compact before pressing. Protect the centre first. Do not jump out without support. Recognize the trigger together. Nearest player presses decisively. Second defender covers inside. Shift toward ball as a unit. Far side squeezes. Shorten distances between lines. Communicate before stepping. Arrive under control. If the trigger disappears, do not chase — hold and wait. If the press breaks, recover shape and reform the block. Step forward together when possible. Transition immediately after regain. Not every pass is a press — sometimes the correct action is hold, shift, and wait.

Progressions

  • Increase the possession team's tempo.
  • Give the possession team one extra player.
  • Reduce the vertical space of the middle third.
  • Require regain within a short time window after a recognized trigger.
  • Allow faster switches of play by the possession team.
  • Require the pressing team to transition immediately after regain.
  • Vary which triggers activate full collective pressure.

Regressions

  • Smaller pitch with a larger middle-third pressing zone.
  • Equal numbers with slower possession tempo.
  • Fewer permitted pressing triggers.
  • Coach initially identifies the trigger for the team.
  • Give the pressing team additional time to organise before the ball moves.
  • Limit the possession team's touches if required.
