Organization

Set up a directional rectangular pitch (approximately 44 × 34 m) with a left side lane, central corridor, right side lane, and a target end zone at each end. Split players into two teams of 6 (possession vs pressing). The pressing team starts compact in a central position. The possession team begins with the ball and attempts to progress directionally toward the opposite end zone. Before the trap activates, the pressing team uses body orientation, starting position, and curved approach runs to encourage the ball toward the selected side. Once the ball enters the chosen side, the pressing phase activates: the nearest defender presses the ball, the next defender blocks the inside escape, supporting players shift across, and far-side players squeeze in to remove the switch. The pressing team regains possession and transitions immediately toward the nearest target zone. If possession escapes through the central corridor or switches to the opposite side, the trap is broken and the pressing team resets shape.

Coaching Points

Show the ball where you want it to go. Approach with body shape that blocks one option. Do not press before teammates are connected. Nearest player presses aggressively once the trap activates. Second defender blocks the inside escape. Far-side players squeeze across. Reduce distances between lines. Protect the central corridor. Communicate the selected pressing side. Arrive under control. Do not allow an easy switch. If the trap breaks, reset rather than chase individually. React immediately after regain. Transition forward when possible.

Progressions

  • Reduce the width of the lock zone.
  • Give the possession team one extra player.
  • Require the pressing team to regain within a time window after the ball enters the selected side.
  • Allow the possession team to switch play more quickly.
  • Require the pressing team to transition immediately after regain.
  • Alternate the selected pressing side each sequence.

Regressions

  • Smaller pitch with a larger lock zone.
  • Equal teams with slower possession tempo.
  • Predefine the pressing side so the team can organise.
  • Give the pressing team additional time to organise before the ball moves.
  • Limit the possession team's touches if required.
