Near-Post Decoy — Open Central Finishing Lane

A wide attacking pattern using two coordinated runs into the box. The first runner attacks the near-post zone to drag a defender while the second arrives into the central lane for the actual finish.

Organization

Use a full-size goal, wide server, two attackers and one or two defenders. The first attacker sprints across the near-post channel as the service is prepared; the second delays and attacks the penalty-spot/central lane. Server can cross or cut the ball back based on defender reaction.

Coaching Points

Decoy run must be aggressive enough to move the defender | Second runner delays rather than following the first | Server scans the movement before selecting delivery | Attack different vertical lines in the box | Second runner finishes first time when possible

Progressions

  • Make both defenders fully live and allow the server to choose near, central or cutback delivery.

Regressions

  • Use passive defenders and predetermined central delivery.
