Overhit Pass Recovery — Chase, Hook Back and Connect

A technical rescue exercise for passes that travel beyond the ideal receiving point. Players chase the ball, prevent it from escaping the area and use a controlled hook or outside touch to bring it back toward support.

Recover an overhit pass near the touchline and keep possession by hooking the ball back into a supporting connection.

Organization

Mark a 16x8m channel with a 2m recovery zone at the far end. The server intentionally varies pass weight. The receiver chases overhit passes into the recovery zone, keeps the ball in play with one controlled touch and connects with a trailing support player.

Coaching Points

Sprint early when the pass is heavy | Approach side-on rather than square | Keep the rescue touch inside the playing area | Know where support is before reaching the ball | Do not turn a rescue action into a forced forward pass

Progressions

  • Add a defender who can press the support player after the rescue touch.

Regressions

  • Widen the recovery zone and remove defensive pressure.
