Cushion-Into-Run — Absorb Firm Pass Without Stopping Support

A receiving practice where the player does not kill the ball under the body. Instead, the first contact removes pace and redirects the ball into a teammate running across the receiver.

Use a soft directional touch to absorb a firm pass directly into the path of a moving support player.

Organization

Set a 14x12m triangle with a server, central receiver and moving support. The server plays firmly into the receiver as the support player runs across from one side to the other. The receiver cushions first time or with one controlled touch into the runner's path.

Coaching Points

See the support run before contact | Relax the receiving surface to remove pace | Redirect into space rather than at the runner's feet | Support player maintains speed through the action | Receiver opens the body so the cushion can travel across the line

Progressions

  • Add a passive defender behind the receiver who can become active after the first contact.

Regressions

  • Slow the service and predetermine the support runner's direction.
