Side-On 1v1 — Attack from the Angle

A directional 1v1 where the defender approaches from the attacker’s side rather than directly in front. The attacker must protect the inside lane, manipulate the defender and accelerate into one of two scoring gates.

Organization

Set a 14x10m channel with two scoring gates on the end line. Attacker starts with the ball centrally while defender starts 3m to one side and slightly behind. On the coach signal both go live.

Coaching Points

First touch protects the ball from the defender’s approach | Attack the defender’s front foot | Use body shape to hide the exit direction | Change pace after the move | Finish the action through the gate under control

Progressions

  • Allow the defender to choose either side starting position at the last moment.

Regressions

  • Increase the attacker’s head start and widen the gates.
