1v1 Chase Start — Attacker Protects the Running Line

The attacker dribbles toward a finish line with a defender chasing from behind, using the body to shield the ball while maintaining forward momentum. The drill trains ball protection under rear pressure and the ability to carry the ball at speed without losing control.

Develop ball protection in a 1v1 chase scenario — attacker starts ahead with the ball, defender chases from behind, attacker must shield and reach the finish line.

Organization

Set up a 20×10m lane. Attacker starts 2m ahead with the ball, defender 2m behind. On the whistle, attacker dribbles toward the finish line 15m ahead while defender chases. Attacker must protect the ball (body between defender and ball) and cross the line. If defender touches the ball, the rep restarts. 6 reps, swap roles, rest 30s.

Coaching Points

1. Keep the ball on the foot furthest from the defender. 2. Lean slightly back into the defender — use the shoulder, not the arm. 3. Don't slow down to shield — keep moving forward. 4. If the defender overcommits to one side, cut the other way. 5. Keep the head up — see the line and the defender. 6. Short, quick touches — don't let the ball run away.

Progressions

  • Start the defender 1m behind — less reaction time.
  • Add a cone gate at the finish — attacker must exit through a 1m gate.

Regressions

  • Start the defender 3m behind — more time and space.
  • Widen the lane to 15m — more room to escape.
