1v1 Receive and Turn — Defender Chooses the Shoulder

A back-to-goal receiver must feel which shoulder the defender approaches from and turn away from the pressure to escape through a forward gate. The practice develops body awareness, shoulder-checking, and the ability to turn under contact without losing the ball.

Develop the ability to receive with back-to-goal pressure, read which shoulder the defender is approaching from, and turn the opposite way to escape.

Organization

Set up a 15×12m area. Server passes to Attacker who is back-to-goal. Defender marks from behind, choosing to approach from the left or right shoulder. Attacker must feel/see the defender, receive, and turn away from the pressure side, then dribble to a gate 8m ahead. 8 reps, rotate roles every 4.

Coaching Points

1. Scan over both shoulders before receiving — know where the defender is. 2. Receive with the foot furthest from the defender — protect the ball. 3. If the defender is on the right shoulder, turn left — and vice versa. 4. The turn is sharp — inside hook or pull-back, not a slow rotation. 5. Accelerate immediately after the turn — don't pause. 6. Keep the ball close during the turn — don't push it too far.

Progressions

  • Defender can approach from either shoulder at full speed — less time to read.
  • Limit the attacker to two touches — receive and turn in one motion.

Regressions

  • Defender is passive — light pressure from one shoulder only.
  • Server tells the attacker which way to turn before the pass.
