1v1 Square Escape — Score by Exiting Any Side

The attacker dribbles inside a square and can score by exiting through any of the four sides, while the defender must cover every direction. The open scoring rule forces the attacker to scan, change direction, and exploit whichever side the defender leaves open.

Develop 1v1 creativity and escape ability by dribbling in a square where the attacker can score by exiting through any of the four sides — forcing the defender to cover all directions.

Organization

Set up a 12×12m square with 4 cones (one on each side as exit gates). Attacker starts in the centre with the ball, defender in front. Attacker must exit through any side (dribble past a cone) to score. Defender tries to win the ball or block all exits. If defender wins, swap roles. 60s rounds, 4 rounds per pair, rest 30s.

Coaching Points

1. Scan all four sides — don't fixate on one exit. 2. Use feints to commit the defender, then escape the opposite way. 3. Keep the ball close — short touches in a tight space. 4. If the defender blocks one side, quickly change direction to another. 5. Protect the ball with the body when the defender is close. 6. Accelerate through the exit — don't slow down at the cone.

Progressions

  • Make the square smaller (8×8m) — less space, tighter 1v1.
  • Defender can score by dribbling out — both players attack and defend.

Regressions

  • Make the square larger (15×15m) — more space to escape.
  • Defender is passive — jogs, doesn't tackle.
