3-1 Security Shift — Far Fullback Drops, 6 Screens the Centre

An in-possession security exercise where the far-side fullback becomes the third defender as the ball is established on one flank, leaving the 6 as the single screen in front.

Maintain a 3-1 security structure behind the attack by dropping the far fullback into the back line while the 6 screens centrally.

Organization

Use a 48x40m directional area with an attacking target zone and two counter mini-goals. The attacking team builds on one side with the near fullback higher. The far fullback drops next to two centre-backs, while the 6 remains central behind the attacking unit.

Coaching Points

Far fullback drops early enough to protect a switch turnover | Three defenders stay connected across the pitch | 6 protects the most direct central counter lane | Near fullback can stay higher only when 3+1 security is stable | Shift the whole structure as the ball changes side

Progressions

  • Leave two opposition counter targets high to stress the security structure.

Regressions

  • Use one counter target and allow the far fullback to begin deeper.
