3+2 Build-Up vs Front Four — Far 6 Appears Outside Cover Shadow

A build-up positioning exercise where three first-line players work with two midfielders against a front four. The key detail is the far pivot adjusting laterally to stay visible beyond the nearest presser's cover shadow.

Use two midfield supports at different angles so the far 6 appears outside the cover shadow of a four-player press.

Organization

Use a 38x32m build-up area with three build-up players, two 6s and two end targets against four pressers. The pivots must remain on different horizontal and vertical lines while the back three circulate.

Coaching Points

Near pivot supports the ball, far pivot supports the next pass | Far 6 moves outside the cover shadow before the ball travels | Back three circulate to change the pressing angle | Do not flatten both pivots onto one line | Progress when the press commits to one side

Progressions

  • Allow one target to become a recovering defender after the first line is broken.

Regressions

  • Use three pressers and give the far 6 a wider protected lane.
