Inverted Fullback Becomes 6 — Centre-Back Holds Wide Build-Up Lane

A first-line positional rotation where the fullback moves inside to act as a temporary 6, but the outside lane is preserved by the centre-back widening rather than the winger dropping.

Rotate the fullback into the pivot space while the centre-back widens to occupy the outside build-up lane.

Organization

Use a 36x32m build-up area divided into three vertical lanes. Two centre-backs, one fullback, a 6, winger and target players face four pressers. On the trigger, the fullback moves inside and the near centre-back expands into the wide lane.

Coaching Points

Fullback moves inside only when the centre-back can widen | Do not crowd the existing 6 | Centre-back receives facing forward in the wide lane | Winger stays higher to pin the next defender | Rotation must create a new passing lane, not just swap positions

Progressions

  • Allow the wide defender to jump onto the centre-back after the rotation.

Regressions

  • Use three pressers and rehearse the rotation from one fixed side.
