4v4+2 Interior Neutrals — Find Central Overload, Play Beyond

A 4v4 possession game with two neutrals operating inside a protected central strip. The team in possession uses the extra central players to create a temporary overload, but points are awarded only when the overload leads to progression beyond the strip.

Develop recognising and using a central numerical overload before progressing beyond pressure.

Organization

Set a 30x22m rectangle with a 5m central strip. Play 4v4 with two neutral players inside the strip. Teams score by entering one neutral, receiving out the far side, and maintaining possession for the next pass. Neutrals can move along the strip but not leave it.

Coaching Points

Look centrally before circulating around the outside | Use the neutral to attract and eliminate pressure | Support on both sides of the strip | Play through, not into and back without purpose | Change the point of attack if the centre is closed

Progressions

  • Allow one defender to enter the central strip after the neutral's first touch.

Regressions

  • Increase the strip width and allow neutrals two or three touches.
