Blind-Side Scan Triangle — Check Shoulder, Receive and Play

Three players pass around a triangle and each receiver must check the blind-side shoulder before receiving, then play a clean pass to the next corner. The exercise builds the automatic habit of scanning before the ball arrives so the first touch is informed, not reactive.

Develop the habit of checking the blind-side shoulder before receiving, then playing a clean first-time or two-touch pass to the next player in a triangle.

Organization

Set up 3 cones in a triangle (6m apart) in a 12×12m area. 3 players, one at each cone. Player A passes to Player B. Before receiving, Player B checks over the left shoulder (blind side), then receives with the back foot, and plays to Player C. Player C checks the right shoulder, receives, and plays to Player A. Continue clockwise, then counter-clockwise. 90s per direction, rest 30s, 3 sets.

Coaching Points

1. Check the shoulder before the ball arrives — not after. 2. The check should be a quick glance — don't turn your whole body. 3. Receive with the back foot (the foot furthest from the passer) — open the hips. 4. First touch sets the ball in the direction of the next pass. 5. Pass firmly on the ground — inside of the foot, ankle locked. 6. After passing, move slightly to create a better angle for the return.

Progressions

  • Add a passive defender inside the triangle — the shoulder check becomes functional.
  • Limit to one-touch passing — no time to settle the ball.

Regressions

  • Use two-touch — receive, then pass — no time pressure.
  • Make the triangle smaller (4m) — shorter, easier passes.
