Third-Line Drop Set — Receive Beyond, Lay Back, Release Forward

A three-line passing pattern in which the first receiver starts beyond pressure, sets the ball back into support and immediately creates a new lane for a third player to play forward.

Connect a receiver beyond the first pressure line with a backward set that releases a third player forward through the next line.

Organization

Mark three horizontal bands in a 20x14m area. Player A passes through the first line to B in the middle band. B sets backward to C, who has moved underneath, and C immediately plays forward into D arriving beyond B. Rotate roles through the sequence.

Coaching Points

B checks both shoulders before receiving | Set backward at an angle rather than straight into pressure | C arrives while the first pass is travelling | Forward pass should lead D into the next band | B moves after the set to support the continuation

Progressions

  • Add a defender who can screen the forward pass from C after B sets the ball.

Regressions

  • Remove pressure and allow C an extra touch before releasing D.
