Bounce and Lay-Off — Set the Next Pass

A technical passing practice built around the bounce pass. Players receive with pressure imagined behind them and set the ball first time or in two touches into the path of a supporting teammate who then plays forward.

Develop controlled set-backs and lay-offs that prepare the next player to pass forward at speed.

Organization

Set a central target player with support players 6–8m behind and forward targets 10–15m away. Ball travels into the target, is laid off to support, then played forward. Rotate target and support roles regularly.

Coaching Points

Set at an angle rather than straight back | Weight the lay-off for the next action | Target player stays strong and balanced | Supporting player arrives as the ball travels | Forward pass should break the next line

Progressions

  • Add a defender behind the target player who can intercept poor set-backs.

Regressions

  • Use a mannequin as passive pressure and allow two touches for the lay-off.
