Double-Scan Gate Receive — Check Both Shoulders Before First Touch

A perception-first receiving drill where the player must check both shoulders before the pass arrives and use the first touch to exit through the correct gate.

Organization

Place a receiver centrally with one coloured gate to each side and passers 10–12m away. Before every service the coach or a partner changes which gate is active. The receiver must scan both shoulders, receive across the body and play through the live gate.

Progressions

  • Add a trailing defender who can pressure after the receiver's first touch.

Regressions

  • Keep one gate active for several repetitions before changing the cue.
