Clearance Trap at Box Edge — Secure Second Contact, Then Escape

A transition exercise built around the moment after a clearance. The attacking team attempts to secure the second ball at the edge, while the defending team tries to win that contact and escape rather than immediately forcing a long counter.

React to a defensive clearance by trapping the second contact at the edge of the box before escaping pressure into a safer lane.

Organization

Use a full-size goal, box-edge zone and two side escape gates 25–30m from goal. Begin with a cross into the box. The defending team clears toward the edge. Players contest the second contact; if defenders secure it, they score by escaping through either side gate.

Coaching Points

Edge players anticipate the clearance before it happens | First contact after the clearance should secure, not panic | Defenders escape away from the densest pressure | Former attackers counterpress the second ball | Use side gates to reward controlled escape

Progressions

  • Allow the attacking team to shoot immediately if they win the second contact cleanly.

Regressions

  • Predetermine the clearance zone and start defenders with numerical support around the edge.
