Lost Overlap Recovery — Winger Delays, Fullback Sprints Inside

A turnover scenario beginning from an attacking overlap. When the ball is lost wide, the winger becomes the first defender and slows the counter while the fullback recovers inside rather than chasing directly behind the ball.

Coordinate recovery after possession is lost during an overlap: the winger delays the ball while the advanced fullback recovers through the inside lane.

Organization

Use a 36x30m wide-to-central area with a full-size goal at one end and two counter gates at the other. Start with winger and overlapping fullback attacking. On a forced turnover, two or three defenders counter while the winger delays and fullback sprints diagonally inside to restore central cover.

Coaching Points

Winger reacts first and delays the ball carrier | Fullback recovery route is inside-to-goal, not straight down the touchline | Protect the centre before trying to win the ball | Remaining defenders slide toward the ball | Recovering fullback communicates when central cover is restored

Progressions

  • Add a far-side counter runner attacking the opposite channel.

Regressions

  • Start the counter with two attackers only and position the fullback closer to recovery line.
