GK Catch to Three-Lane Counter — Central Release, Wide Support

A goalkeeper-led transition where the first pass is central rather than immediately wide. Two wide runners accelerate on either side and become options for the second forward action.

Turn a goalkeeper catch into a three-lane counterattack by releasing centrally while wide runners create depth on both sides.

Organization

Use a full-size goal and a 45x36m area divided into three vertical lanes, with two mini-goals near halfway. Start with a cross or shot for the goalkeeper to claim. The keeper finds a central receiver, while two wide runners sprint into outside lanes against recovering defenders.

Coaching Points

Goalkeeper scans before distributing | Central receiver opens to both sides | Wide runners sprint early but stay in their lanes | Second pass chooses the less-protected side | If the central option is blocked, secure possession instead of forcing

Progressions

  • Add a pressing forward who can close the central receiver.

Regressions

  • Use passive recovering defenders and give the central receiver two touches.
