Deflection Recovery Pass — React to Ricochet, Secure Next Action

A reactive passing exercise where the original passing lane is deliberately disturbed. The receiver must adjust to a ricochet, secure the loose ball and reconnect instead of freezing after the planned pass breaks down.

React quickly to a deflected pass and turn the unexpected second ball into a controlled next action.

Organization

Set a 14x12m grid with a passer, receiver, support player and active screening defender. The defender is encouraged to get a touch on passes without fully clearing. When a deflection occurs, the nearest possession player secures the loose ball and connects with the free support.

Coaching Points

Stay alive after the initial pass | Adjust feet to the new ball angle | Secure before accelerating the next action | Support players react toward the loose ball | Communicate who attacks the second contact

Progressions

  • Allow the defender to counter through a gate if the possession team fail to secure the deflection.

Regressions

  • Use a passive defender who only redirects the ball lightly.
