Goalkeeper as Third Centre-Back — Split CBs, Fullbacks Stay Mid-Line

A build-up structure where the goalkeeper actively joins the first line instead of remaining only behind it. This allows the centre-backs to widen while the fullbacks stay higher and become second-line outlets.

Use the goalkeeper as the central player of a temporary back three while centre-backs split and fullbacks hold a higher line.

Organization

Use the defensive half with one full-size goal. The goalkeeper and two centre-backs build against three pressers, with both fullbacks positioned near a marked mid-line and a 6 available centrally. Score by progressing into three target gates beyond midfield.

Coaching Points

Goalkeeper steps high enough to form a real three | Centre-backs widen to stretch the press | Fullbacks do not drop onto the same line | 6 adjusts away from the cover shadow | Play through, around or over depending on the front three

Progressions

  • Allow a fourth presser to jump onto the 6 after the first pass.

Regressions
