Fullback Drops Into Back Three — Winger Holds High

A positional rotation where the fullback moves down alongside the centre-backs during build-up instead of advancing, while the winger remains high and wide to stretch the next line.

Organization

Use two centre-backs, two fullbacks, a pivot and wide players against a first press. On the chosen side, the fullback drops level with the centre-backs to form a back three. The winger stays high and wide, while the pivot adjusts to remain connected centrally.

Coaching Points

Dropping fullback should create a clear passing angle | Winger must not also drop into the same space | Pivot stays available inside | Opposite fullback can hold a higher support position | Return to normal shape when progression is secured

Progressions

  • Add a front-three press that can lock one side and force the rotation to switch.

Regressions

  • Use passive opposition and rehearse the timing from a goalkeeper restart.
