Loss After Switch — Far-Side Fullback Leads the Recovery

A directional transition game where possession is lost immediately after switching to the far side. The fullback nearest the new ball side must react first while the rest of the team recovers inside.

Improve negative transition after a switch of play by making the far-side fullback the first recovery reference.

Organization

Play 5v5 to 7v7 with wide channels and mini-goals. Encourage a switch from one side to the other. On selected or natural turnovers after the switch, the far-side fullback presses or delays the new ball carrier while teammates sprint into central recovery positions.

Coaching Points

Fullback reacts as soon as the switch is lost | Recover inside before recovering wide | Nearest midfielder covers the fullback's inside shoulder | Back line protects depth | Do not continue attacking runs after the turnover

Progressions

  • Give the regaining team a direct six-second window to score through a counter goal.

Regressions

  • Freeze the first few turnovers to coach recovery roles before playing live.
