Regain-to-GK Reset — Secure Backward, Switch the Counter

A transition exercise where the regaining team is not rewarded for forcing forward immediately. If the regain occurs under heavy pressure, the first secure action can go back to the goalkeeper, who switches the point of attack.

Use the goalkeeper as a safe first reset after a difficult regain, then switch the next attack away from the turnover pressure.

Organization

Use a 44x34m area with a full-size goal and goalkeeper at one end and two wide mini-goals near halfway. Play 5v5 or 6v6 in front of the goal. After a regain inside a marked pressure zone, the team can score bonus points by finding the GK and then attacking the opposite-side mini-goal.

Coaching Points

Recognise when the forward counter is closed | Backward pass must be secure and intentional | GK scans opposite side before receiving | Team expands as the ball travels to GK | Next pass should escape the turnover pressure, not return into it

Progressions

  • Allow one opponent to press the goalkeeper after the backward reset.

Regressions

  • Make the goalkeeper unpressured and start with one designated counter mini-goal.
