Man-Marking Corner Defence — Track and Clear

A corner-defending practice based on man-marking rather than zonal responsibility. Defenders learn to track runs, maintain goal-side positioning, attack the delivery and reorganise for the second ball.

Defend corners with clear man-marking responsibility, aggressive first contact and coordinated clearance.

Organization

Set a full-size goal with realistic attacking corner numbers. Assign each defender a direct opponent plus one spare player for the six-yard area if desired. Deliver from both sides and vary near-post, central and far-post runs.

Coaching Points

Start touch-tight without ball watching | Stay goal-side through the attacker’s movement | Attack the ball at the highest safe point | Goalkeeper communicates early | Reconnect quickly for the second phase

Progressions

  • Add blockers and crossing screens so defenders must fight through traffic while maintaining assignments.

Regressions

  • Use one predictable delivery and only three attacking runners.
