Number 10 Drifts to Half-Space — Receive Outside Pivot Shadow

A between-lines positional practice where the attacking midfielder changes their horizontal position to move outside the screening midfielder's cover shadow. The focus is on small, well-timed adjustments rather than constant movement.

Organization

Mark a 28x22m area with a back-line passer, number 10, two side targets and a defending pivot. The 10 begins centrally, then drifts into either half-space as the passer circulates the ball. Score by receiving between lines and connecting to the opposite target.

Coaching Points

Scan the pivot before moving | Move after the ball changes angle, not too early | Receive side-on so the next action can go forward | Use small adjustments to stay outside the cover shadow | Do not leave the pocket if the central lane is already open

Progressions

  • Add a centre-back who can step out after the 10 receives.

Regressions

  • Use a passive pivot and allow the 10 to choose the half-space without contact.
