Number 8 Pulls Wide — Winger Attacks Inside Lane

A flank rotation that exchanges the usual positions of winger and number 8. The midfielder pulls toward the touchline while the winger moves inside, creating a new passing lane between fullback and centre-back.

Develop a rotation where the number 8 moves wide to drag a midfielder and free the winger to attack the inside lane.

Organization

Use a 30x22m flank area with centre-back/server, fullback, number 8, winger and two defenders. Start with the 8 inside and winger wide. The 8 moves toward the touchline, the winger enters the half-space and the group attempts to progress through a central end gate or combine with the fullback.

Coaching Points

The 8 moves wide only when it changes the defender's position | Winger attacks the inside lane at the same moment | Fullback balances the rotation rather than occupying the same space | Receive between lines with an open body | Exploit the new lane quickly before the defence resets

Progressions

  • Add a recovering midfielder to create a 4v3 once the ball enters the inside lane.

Regressions

  • Use passive defenders and pre-set the rotation timing.
