Double-Pivot Stagger — One Shows, One Runs Beyond

A build-up exercise built around the relationship of a double pivot. Instead of both midfielders showing to the same line, one drops to connect and the other moves higher to create depth and a progressive option.

Develop complementary movement between two pivots so one offers underneath while the other threatens space beyond the first pressure line.

Organization

Use a 34x26m area with two centre-backs, two pivots, two advanced targets and three pressers. The centre-backs circulate until one pivot drops to receive; the second pivot must adjust higher or diagonally. Score by finding the advanced target after using the staggered midfield relationship.

Coaching Points

Avoid both pivots standing on the same horizontal line | One player supports underneath while the other creates depth | Scan pressure before choosing who drops | Use diagonal rather than straight support angles | Rotate roles after each successful progression

Progressions

  • Add a fourth defender and allow one presser to track the higher pivot.

Regressions

  • Use passive pressure and pre-assign which pivot drops on each repetition.
