Centre-Back to Fullback Third-Man — Bounce Around First Press

A first-phase build-up pattern in which the direct centre-back-to-fullback lane is blocked, so the ball travels through a supporting midfielder and back into the fullback's path. The practice teaches players to solve an angle problem with a third-man combination.

Develop a third-man build-up solution where the centre-back uses a midfielder's bounce pass to release the fullback around the first presser.

Organization

Use a 30x24m build-up area with centre-back, fullback, pivot/8, wide target and two pressers. The first presser blocks the direct fullback lane. Centre-back plays into the midfielder, who sets or bounces around pressure for the fullback to receive facing forward and progress.

Coaching Points

Recognise when the direct fullback pass is screened | Midfielder arrives on a different line to the fullback | Bounce pass is played into the fullback's forward path | Fullback moves as the ball travels into the midfielder | Play through pressure with minimum touches

Progressions

  • Make both pressers live and allow them to recover after the bounce pass.

Regressions

  • Use one passive presser and rehearse the timing of the third-man movement.
