Pass Through Moving Window — Time the Release

Two cones open and close to create a moving window and the passer must time a through-ball so it passes through the gap at the right moment. The drill trains the patience and vision to delay a pass until the lane appears, rather than forcing the ball early.

Develop passing timing by playing a through-ball through a moving window (two cones that open and close), requiring the passer to wait for the right moment to release.

Organization

Set up a 'window' (2 cones 2m apart) in the middle of a 15×12m area. Two players hold the window cones and move them together and apart slowly. Player A has the ball 8m from the window. Player B is 5m beyond the window. Player A must pass through the window when it's open to reach Player B. If the window is closed, wait. 8 reps, rotate window holders.

Coaching Points

1. Watch the window — don't pass until it's open. 2. Be patient — hold the ball if the window is closing. 3. When the window opens, pass immediately — don't hesitate. 4. The pass is firm and on the ground — through the gap to B's feet. 5. Follow through toward the target — accuracy over power. 6. B should move to receive the pass — don't stand still.

Progressions

  • The window moves faster — quicker opening and closing.
  • Add a passive defender who tries to block the pass — real pressure.

Regressions

  • The window is static — no movement, just pass through.
  • Make the window wider (3m) — easier to pass through.
