Perception Warm-Up — Scan & Find Space

Environment-led perception warm-up where players move continuously with a ball, scan the area, recognize free space and carry into it before it closes. Free-space targets (gates, zones, colored markers) create multiple viable choices. Decisions are driven by player traffic and environmental information, not coach commands.

Develop continuous scanning and spatial awareness while moving with the ball, so players recognize and attack available space before it closes.

Organization

Rectangular activation area with several clearly recognizable free-space targets (cone gates, small marked zones, or colored marker areas). Players move continuously inside the area, most with a ball. Players scan the environment and carry the ball toward an available gate or space. After entering or crossing a free-space target, they immediately scan again, select another free space, change direction and continue. The environment changes naturally as other players occupy spaces and gates become temporarily unavailable. Do not create queues or permanently assign one player to one gate.

Coaching Points

Lift your head between touches. Scan before changing direction. See more than one option. Identify free space early. Do not follow the ball blindly. Move away from crowded areas. Use both feet. Control the ball while looking away from it. Adjust touch size to available space. Accelerate when open space appears. Re-scan immediately after entering new space. Avoid collisions. Keep moving.

Progressions

  • Reduce area slightly
  • Add more player traffic
  • Require shoulder check before changing direction
  • Weak-foot carry into selected space
  • Different touch requirement after entering space
  • Award points for finding unoccupied gates

Regressions

  • Enlarge area
  • Add more free-space gates
  • Reduce speed
  • Fewer players in same area
  • Unrestricted foot use
  • Clearly separated target spaces
