Press the Switch — Travel While Ball Travels

A possession-to-pressing practice where defenders are rewarded for shifting early during a switch of play. The aim is to arrive close enough to the receiver that the far side cannot control and attack forward.

Develop collective pressing movement during a long switch so the receiving side is closed before the ball arrives.

Organization

Use a 36x28m area with wide channels. Play 5v5 or 6v6. The possession team receives a bonus for successful switches; defenders score a defensive point if they force the switched receiver backward or regain within three seconds of the switch.

Coaching Points

Move while the ball travels, not after it arrives | Far-side defender closes distance under control | Nearest midfielder protects the inside return pass | Back line shifts together behind the press | Do not over-run the receiver and allow an inside escape

Progressions

  • Require the switch to be aerial, increasing travel time and defensive movement cues.

Regressions

  • Narrow the field and allow defenders to start closer to the far side.
