Receive, Open & Switch Play

A technical passing/receiving drill focused on receiving orientation to change the point of attack: the ball arrives from one side, the central receiver scans, opens the body, takes a directional first touch across into a new lane, and switches the ball to the opposite side. The change of side is the core learning objective.

Develop receiving orientation and passing technique to transfer the ball efficiently from one side of the playing area to the opposite side.

Organization

Set up a wide rectangular or diamond-shaped area with a left-side player, a central connector, a right-side player, and 2 continuation/rotation players. The ball starts on one side (A left → B central → C right). The central receiver B scans the opposite side before the ball arrives, arrives on an open body, receives across body / on the back foot, uses the first touch to open the opposite passing lane, and plays an accurate switch pass to the opposite side. Circulation then resets/rotates so the next repetition can switch back in the opposite direction. Use 2 parallel groups of 5 when 10 players are available.

Coaching Points

Scan the far side before receiving and check the shoulder while the ball travels. Arrive on an open body and receive on the back foot where appropriate. Take the first touch across the body into the new lane — avoid receiving square or closed. The first touch should separate the ball from pressure. Play an accurate pass to the opposite side with the correct weight for the distance. Communicate before receiving. Reposition after passing. Recognize when the switch is available and do not force it if the lane is clearly closed. Increase tempo while maintaining receiving quality.

Progressions

  • Passive pressure from the incoming side
  • Late left/right cue
  • Two possible far-side targets
  • Smaller central receiving space
  • Two-touch maximum
  • Longer switch-pass distance
  • One-touch switch only as an advanced progression when the receiving situation permits

Regressions

  • Fixed switch direction
  • Larger space
  • No pressure cue
  • Shorter passing distance
  • Extra touches allowed
  • Clearly marked receiving angle
