Third-Man Passing — Play Beyond

A passing drill focused on third-man combination play: one player connects the ball to a different teammate arriving beyond the first receiver or pressure line. The core identity is A → B → C — a true third-man progression, not a wall pass.

Organization

Set up a rectangular area with a clear progression line or zone (cones, poles or passive defender) representing the pressure to play beyond. Five players: A (initial passer), B (connecting/set player), C (third-man runner), D/E (continuation and rotation). A passes into B; as the ball travels, C moves into the next space beyond the pressure line; B connects the ball to C; C receives forward and progresses to the next station. Rotate roles so every player experiences first passer, connector, and third-man runner. Use 2 parallel groups of 5 when 10 players are available.

Coaching Points

Scan before the first pass. Quality and weight of A → B. B checks the shoulder before receiving and sets a body shape that allows connection forward. C starts movement at the correct moment — move while the ball travels, do not arrive too early. The set pass should lead C into the next action. The third player receives facing forward where possible. Communicate. Accelerate after breaking the line. Recognize the free third player. Tempo should come from timing, not rushed passing.

Progressions

  • Two possible third-man runners
  • Late visual cue selects the side
  • Passive defender blocks one lane
  • B limited to two touches
  • B plays one-touch only when technically appropriate
  • Reduce space
  • Increase circulation speed

Regressions

  • Fixed third-man side
  • Larger area
  • Visible progression lane
  • More touches allowed
  • Slower movement
  • No passive defender
