Second-Phase Corner — Win the Loose Ball

A corner practice that continues after the first clearance. Attackers organise players around the box to recover loose balls, recycle possession and deliver or shoot again, while defenders work to step out and protect the second phase.

React to a partially cleared corner, secure the second ball and create a second attacking action.

Organization

Set a full-size goal and normal attacking corner setup. Add two attacking players outside the box specifically for second-ball coverage. After every first clearance the phase stays live for eight seconds and the attack tries to create a second shot or cross.

Coaching Points

Balance the box with players ready for clearances | React before the ball lands | First touch should secure or set the next action | Recycle quickly to the weak side | Defenders step out together after the clearance

Progressions

  • Award the attack extra points for scoring from a second-phase action rather than the first delivery.

Regressions

  • Coach sends predictable clearances to nominated edge-of-box players.
